MONMOUTH PARK RACETRACK GEERS UP FOR THE HASKELL AS “TOP CLEARANCE” THROWS HIS NAME INTO THE MIX AS COMPETITOS AGAINST THE HORSE ‘PHAROAH’

TOP CLEARANCE THROWS HIS NAME INTO HASKELL MIX;

WAYNE CATALANO TRAINEE TO TAKE ON TRIPLE CROWN WINNER ‘PHAROAH’

0411a_monmouth_hn_40p With only a week left until Monmouth Park’s signature event, the $1 million William Hill Haskell Invitational, the field continues to take shape with Top Clearance adding his name to the field of competitors to take on Triple Crown winner American Pharoah on Aug. 2.

“He worked the other day and was excellent,” said Catalano, who conditions the horse for Gary and Mary West. “He is already stabled at Monmouth now. We aren’t going to do too much with him before the race.”

That latest work came two days ago on July 24 over a fast Monmouth main track where he went seven furlongs in 1:25 2/5, the only one to go seven furlongs on that day.

The 3-year-old colt by Majestic Warrior out of the Tiznow mare Sweet Beat has rattled off two straight wins including an allowance/optional claiming event on July 11 going a mile and a sixteenth at Monmouth earlier in the meet.haskill2

In that latest victory, he sat comfortably off the early pace of Ponzi Scheme before moving to the outside of the leader at the quarter pole and cruised to a length score.

Prior to that, Top Clearance broke his maiden going seven furlongs on June 13 at Churchill Downs where he had to stay three-wide the entire trip before hitting the wire first for a hard fought length and a half score.

In his four career starts, Top Clearance has yet to miss the board with a record of 2-2-0 with two of those starts coming at Monmouth Park.

“Our plan is to sit back early in the race,” said Catalano. “We will look for an opportunity for one good run. He will be ready to go.”haskill3

Abel Castellano Jr. will be aboard Top Clearance for the first time in next Sunday’s Haskell.

With Top Clearance’s name now on the list of challengers for American Pharoah, the field for the Haskell is likely to include: Competitive Edge, Mr. Jordan, War Story, Keen Ice, and Tekton.nbc_logo_2015

The William Hill Haskell will be televised live on NBC from 5-6 p.m. and is part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Series, with the victor getting an automatic berth to the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland on Oct. 31.

Triple Crown-winner American Pharoah is expected to bring big business to the Jersey Shore!

Pharoah’s Gallop Open To The Public Friday And Saturday AmericanPharoah_Belmont_391x            Once American Pharoah arrives at Monmouth Park on Wednesday, he is scheduled to gallop over the main track on Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning in preparation to the 48th renewal of the $1 million William Hill Haskell Invitational on Aug. 2nd 2015.
            haski
On Friday and Saturday, the clubhouse will be open to the public from 7-8 a.m. to see the Triple Crown winner between 7:30-7:50 a.m. That time slot will be designated for Haskell participants only on those days.

There is no cost for entry into the Clubhouse to view American Pharoah and all the Haskell horses on the track in the morning.monmou
In addition to American Pharoah, the likely field for this year’s edition of the Haskell Invitational consists of: Mr. Jordan, Competitive Edge, Keen Ice, War Story and Tekton. The race will be telecast live on NBC from 5-6 p.m. Gates will open at 9 a.m. on race day with first post set for 11:30 a.m.

Hotels across the Jersey Shore are excited to be able to accommodate the fans of American Pharoah. Places like the Sheraton in Eatontown, the Staybridge Suites in Eatontown, The Holiday Inn Express in Eatontown and Long Branch and all of the Marriott hotels can be reached for reservations.

haskill3This is one Haskell you will not want to miss. New Jersey Transit will be adding additional stops at the track on race day to accommodate all the people expected to attend.

MORE ABOUT THE HASKELL:

The 2015 running of the William Hill haskill2
Haskell Invitational marks the 48th renewal of the race named for the first president and chairman of the Monmouth Park Jockey Club, Amory Lawrence Haskell.Amory L. Haskell was born in New York City in 1893. Following his graduation from Princeton University in 1916, he began a business career with the New Jersey Zinc Company. That was interrupted by two years with the Naval Aviation Service in World War I. After his tour of duty, Haskell joined the General Motors Corporation and rose to the position of vice-president in charge of the company’s export division. He left General Motors to form Triplex Safety Glass Company and was president and chairman of the board when he sold it. Shortly before World War II, after several years of intense lobbying in which Haskell played a prominent role, an amendment to the New Jersey State Constitution was approved by referendum, legalizing pari-mutuel wagering for Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing. Haskell then organized a group of prominent New Jersey residents to build a modern Thoroughbred racetrack in Monmouth County. Appointed president and chairman of Monmouth Park Jockey Club in 1945, he guided that organization through its opening in 1946 and continued at the helm until his death on April 12, 1966. In 1968, the haskill
Monmouth Park Directors honored his memory with the Amory L. Haskell Handicap, a race for older horses. In 1981, the Haskell name was transferred to a mile and an eighth invitational for the nation’s top three-year-olds. As a tribute to the man honored by this race, Amory L. Haskell’s daughters, Hope Haskell-Jones and Anne Haskell-Ellis, present the Haskell trophy each year.
